Description
Up for grabs is a rare and special opportunity to acquire a few rare and sought after Longines chronograph from the 1940s, powered by their legendary “Cal. 13ZN” movement. The 13ZN pioneered the world’s first flyback function which allowed the wearer to reset the chronograph without first having to stop it, making it quicker and easier to time an event. This particular Longines chronograph bears the reference 5415, which is a rare 37.5mm snapback waterproof case; further, it is fitted with an extremely attractive and desirable black “gilt” dial, very rarely seen. Please Note: this watch has been confirmed by Longines Heritage Department, but the Extract (originally ordered upon the discovery of this watch in 2018) has been misplaced by the previous owner, and a replacement has been ordered and will be included in the sale.
This Longines chronograph is in excellent vintage condition, especially in lieu of its age, and the fact that these 13ZNs were heavily used over the years. The case remains unpolished, and sharp, with no major wear. The original gilt dial is overall very attractive, with no major flaws, and aging consistent with the age of the watch. Further, the watch retains its original radium lume on both dial and hands, aged to a nice yellow color.
The watch comes fitted on a straight-lug stretch-rivet Gay Freres bracelet, dating to 1967; while not original to the watch, it is a rare and valuable bracelet in its own right.
