Description
Up for grabs is a very rare and stunning early Rolex Submariner, the Reference 6538 “Big Crown”. This model is nicknamed the “James Bond” Submariner, due to the fact that James Bond famously wore the same reference watch in several Bond films, including Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball. The “Big Crown” Submariners were produced by Rolex between 1954 and 1959, and are highly regarded as the “holy grail” in Rolex Submariner collecting. The present example dates to 1958-59, and has been well preserved over the years.
This Rolex Submariner, as previously mentioned, is in very good vintage condition. The case has been lightly polished in the past, with its original beveled edges still visible in the lugs. The dial has no major wear or damage, and shows light “spidering” under a loupe/at an angle, which is very common for these early gilt dials; regardless, the dial is still very glossy, and gilt inlay is vibrant and colorful. The original radium lume is still present on both dial and hands, aged to a golden orange color. Further, the original “Red Triangle” bezel insert is still fitted on the watch, with normal wear.
The watch comes fitted on a Rolex Swiss Rivet 7206 bracelet, with correct 80 endlinks, and is dated to 1961; the bracelet has 11 full links and minimal stretch.
These “Big Crown” Submariners do not come to market very often in good condition – here is your chance to own this iconic watch, worthy of any serious Rolex collection.
