Rolex “MK1” Explorer II

SOLD

Description

The Rolex Explorer II debuted in 1971, given the Reference 1655, and was an extension of Rolex’s Explorer line, creating a rugged sports watch, also featuring a GMT function. This GMT function is delineated by the addition of the “Freccione” or orange hand. This watch was popularized for its use by the famous actor, Steve McQueen. The present example is an MK1 Explorer II, produced circa 1972 (2.7m serial).

This Rolex Explorer II in exemplary condition. The lugs are thick and even, possibly unpolished with no wear to the sides of the case, and with original bevels visible. The dial is immaculate, with no chips or marks. The original lume is present in both the hands and dial markers, having aged to an amazing and vibrant yellow color.  The original MK1 bezel is also unpolished, with no detail loss.  The watch comes equipped on its original 7836 folded link bracelet, with 280 endlinks, and 13 full links, clasp stamped 1st quarter of 1972, and is in good condition, with medium stretch.
