Description
Up for grabs is a lovely and incredibly rare example of a gilt dial Rolex Explorer, Ref. 1016. This example dates to circa 1966, and features a “gilt” dial. Further, this watch remains with its original Rolex box and double-Warranty certificates: a Guarantee booklet, showing the date of sale originally in NYC in 1968, and its “punched” Chronometer timing Certificate.
This Rolex Explorer is in excellent vintage condition. The case appears unpolished (or if it ever was, it was extremely light), and shows thick and even lugs. The gilt dial is very well-preserved and still glossy, retaining its mirror-like appearance. The original lume is in-tact and preserved on the dial and hands, aged to a golden yellow color, showing one very minor chip to the 6 o’clock marker. Finally, the watch is fitted on a Rolex Swiss Rivet 7206 bracelet with 58 endlinks, dated to 1969, and has 12 full links with no stretch.
