Rolex “18kt Gold 16808” Submariner

Description

Offered here is a lovely example of a Rolex Submariner, circa 1980, in 18kt Yellow Gold, reference 16808.  The 16808 was a transitional reference, following the first gold Submariner reference – 1680.  The new reference 16808 saw a noticeable upgrade in the movement and sturdiness of the case, switching from a plastic crystal to sapphire.  This  particular example is fitted with a matte black dial, with gold print.

This Rolex Submariner is in great vintage condition.  The case does not show signs of overpolishing, with thick and even lugs, and nicely beveled edges.  The dial is in perfect condition, with no flaws.  Further, the original tritium lume is present on both dial and hands, aged to a nice cream color; the hour hand does show some light cracking to the original tritium lume.  The watch comes fitted on its original solid 18kt gold Rolex Oyster 9958 flip-lock bracelet, and has 11 full links (plus diver’s extension) with no stretch.
