Rolex “Tropical Purple 1680/8” Submariner

Offered here is an absolutely stunning Rolex Submariner, reference 1680/8, in 18kt yellow gold, circa 1978.  This particular Submariner was fit with a factory blue dial and matching blue bezel insert; the original blue dial has aged to a striking purple, due to a defect in the lacquer used by Rolex during this era.  The condition of this special Rolex Submariner is lovely.  The case has been previously polished, but retains thick and even lugs, with nicely beveled lugs.  The dial shows no damage or wear and has aged to a lovely purple color throughout. Additionally, the original tritium lume is present on both dial and hands, aged to a lovely cream color.  Finally, the watch comes on a Swiss Rolex Presidential bracelet, fitting an approximate 7-7.2″ wrist, with light stretch; this watch originated out of South America, where many gold sports model Rolex were found with Presidential bracelets (or South American bracelets), as the ADs during this time traditionally used what was available to them due to changing import restrictions on precious metals.
