Rolex “Tropical 5510 Big Crown” Submariner

Up for grabs is a very rare and stunning early Rolex Submariner, the Reference 5510 “Big Crown”, circa 1958. This model is nicknamed the “James Bond” Submariner, due to the fact that James Bond famously wore the watch in several Bond films, including Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball. The “Big Crown” Submariners were produced by Rolex between 1954 and 1959, and are highly regarded as the “holy grail” in Rolex Submariner collecting; it is estimated that only 1000 examples of the reference 5510 were produced. 

This Rolex “Big Crown” Submariner is in excellent vintage condition, very well-preserved.  The case has likely been lightly polished in the past, retaining thick and even lugs, and retaining its factory beveled edges, strong and prevalent.  The dial remains very glossy, with minor wear to the lacquer surface, and has aged to a lovely brown color, really striking under sunlight.  The original radium lume is still present on both dial and hands, aged to a golden yellow color.  Further, the original “Red Triangle” bezel insert remains on the watch, with normal wear from use. Finally, the watch remains on its original “Big Logo” Swiss Rivet bracelet (a rarity and grail bracelet in its own right!), with correct 65 endlinks, and dating to 1959; the bracelet has 13 full links and no stretch.
