Description
Up for grabs is easily one of the rarest watches we have ever offered for sale – a Patek Philippe Ellipse, reference 3598/900, housed in 18kt white gold, and fit with an exceptionally rare “agate” stone dial. This Golden Ellipse was born with a natural purple agate dial, a stone that gives the watch an individuality impossible to reproduce exactly. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only known example of any Patek Philippe fitted with a purple agate dial. Agate is a variety of chalcedony, itself a form of quartz, created over geological time as layers of silica-rich material accumulate within cavities in volcanic rock. Its characteristic bands, translucency, and variations in color are entirely natural, meaning that every slice of agate possesses its own pattern and character. According to the Patek Philippe Extract of the Archives, this Ellipse was both produced and sold in 1975.
This uber-rare Patek Philippe Ellipse is in excellent vintage condition, very carefully worn over the years. The case does not show any signs of polishing, and the stone shows no hairlines, cracks, or damage otherwise. Further, the watch remains with its original white gold Patek Philippe Ellipse buckle.
