The Wakmann Watch Co. was established in 1946 in New York, USA, and was appointed as the official producer and deliverer for the U.S. Military during World War II. In 1947, the Breitling Watch Corporation of America was formed as a joint venture with Wakmann, and their watches were produced under the Breitling name (sometimes double signed).
Wakmann has seen a huge boom among collectors, particular those who love funky chronos of the 50s, 60, and 70s (like myself). Wakmann, like a few select other brands (i’m looking at you Heuer, UG, Gallet, etc), are being snatched up all over the place, and finally getting the appreciation they rightfully deserve.
While it is hard to date this model due to the lack of information available, it seems to be quite early, likely from the 1950s. It is in great vintage condition, with an unpolished case, and all-original condition. The original lume of the hands had chipped out, and a “patina” matching compound was added later on. The stand-out feature of this watch, as you can see, is it’s tropical dial. We have never seen a tropical dial on a Wakmann before, and you are unlikely to see another. The dial is a beautiful brown, and is visible not only outside in the sun, but indoors as well.
Don’t sleep on this one. Unique pieces like this don’t pop up for sale too often!
