Description
Fresh from the original owner’s family, up for grabs is a very rare Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust “Semi-Bubbleback” or “Ovettone”, which is Italian for “Big Egg”, referring to the bubble-shaped case. Due to the rotor being screwed onto the movement, more space was needed and the case back formed to accommodate that. These watches were also large for this era of Rolex, coming in at 36mm. The Reference 6105 was produced with center seconds, and features a roulette date wheel (showing both red and black numbers). Further, this particular example stands out due to the fact that it was co-signed by the retailer “Serpico Y Laino”, based out of Venezuela, and was produced in 18kt solid yellow gold, circa 1953
This Rolex Ovettone Datejust is in very nice vintage condition. The case appears unpolished with thick and even lugs, and honest wear, and has an engraving on the caseback of the original owner’s initials. The dial is very attractive, showing some light wear towards the base of the hands. In the same regard, the watch retains its original radium lume, present on both dial and hands, and aged to a dark yellow color. Finally, the watch comes fitted on its original and early Rolex Swiss 18kt Jubilee bracelet, appears fully linked, and has minimal stretch and overall very well-preserved for its age. The bracelet is dated to 1953, matching the year of production of the watch.
