Up for grabs is one of the most exemplary examples of a gilt dial Rolex Explorer, Ref. 1016, we have had the pleasure of offering for sale. This example dates to 1963, and features a “chapter ring” and “exclamation” dial, which was only used for 1-2 years from 1962-1963. However, what sets this example apart from the pack is the provenance! This watch comes complete as a super full-set, including its original Rolex box, Guarantee Certificate, Chronometer Timing Certificate, two hangtags (one with serial printed, the other with original sales price of $109.00), Rolex Explorer Cigarette card, original sales slip and original sales receipt. A closer look at the paperwork will show you that this watch was sold by a US Navy Exchange (NS Argentia, Newfoundland, specifically) on May 11, 1963, with matching receipts from the US Navy Exchange. A true time capsule and dream collector’s set!
The condition on this rare Rolex Explorer is likewise amazing. The case has been previously polished, but shows thick and even lugs. The gilt dial is a true mirror – it is in perfect condition, as glossy as the day it was manufactured, with no chips, scratches, or flaws — a true 10 out of 10. The original radium lume is in-tact and preserved, present on both the hands and dial, aged to a golden yellow color. Finally, the watch comes on a Rolex C&I Rivet bracelet, dated to 1970 (presumably changed by the owner at some point), and has 12 full links and light stretch.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a true piece of history!
