Up for grabs is the original – the very first Rolex “Explorer” (of the actual Explorer line with black dials) made by Rolex in 1953, developed to in celebration of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay ascents up Mount Everest. The very first black dial Explorer was made with a waffle or “honeycomb” texture to the dial, as is seen here, with correct 4th quarter of 1953 caseback. These are considered one of, if not the most collectible of the Explorers. The present watch is offered unmolested, in original and honest condition. The case has been lightly polished in the past, showing thick and even lugs, and “Registered Design” is still legible on the outside of the caseback. The original gilt dial is very attractive, with only the most minor of wear visible at the edge by the 3 o’clock marker and near the 5 o’clock marker. Further, the watch retains its original radium lume on both dial and original “pencil” hands, aged to a nice dark yellow/orange color. Fitted on the watch is a later Rolex Swiss Oyster Rivet 7206 bracelet with 80 endlinks, dated to 1969, and has 11 full links with almost no stretch.
