Founded by an American watchmaker in 1868, IWC, or International Watch Company, is one of the best, most-respected watch manufacture on the planet. Well known for their aviation watches, IWC, now owned by the Richemont group, is one those brands celebrated by everyone from the common collector, celebrity, to the most advanced horologist.
This watch, a Caliber 83 “calatrava” style watch, is quite the rare bird. Produced in the 1940s, IWC put out a lot of calatrava style dials; however, very few “sector”, tri-tone dials have surfaced in recent years. Go ahead and look for another one for sale, i’ll wait.
What’s more, while searching for examples of this watch on the internet and Instagram, keep tally as to how many are original and how many are refinished. Unfortunately, finding an older IWC in original, unrestored condition is quite the task. This watch is completely original, from top to bottom, and the dial has never been refinished or “touched up”. Housed in a big, almostttt 36mm case, with fixed bars and a screw down caseback, you cannot go wrong with this one.
