Rolex “Tiffany & Co.” Explorer II

SOLD

Description

The Rolex Explorer II debuted in 1971, given the Reference 1655, and was an extension of Rolex’s Explorer line, creating a rugged sports watch, also featuring a GMT function. This GMT function is delineated by the addition of the “Freccione” or orange hand. This watch was popularized for its use by the famous actor, Steve McQueen. The present example dates to 1978 (5.3m serial).

However, what sets this example apart from virtually every other example on the market are two fine details: it was sold/marketed by the famous retailer “Tiffany & Co.”, and is fitted with a rare “rail dial”, meaning that the lines of text “Superlative Chronometer” and “Officially Certified” line up with each other.

This Rolex Explorer II in exemplary condition. The lugs are thick and even, lightly polished in the past, with original bevels still visible. The dial is completely immaculate, with not a blemish in site. The original lume is present in both the hands and dial markers, having aged to a creamy yellow patina.

The watch comes with an original 78360 bracelet, with 580 endlinks, and has 12 full links.  The bracelet is in great condition, with minimal stretch.
