Rolex “Explorer-Dial” Oyster Perpetual Precision

The Reference 6298 was made in the early 1950s for a short period of time, and was considered an upgrade of the reference 6028, featuring a new, COSC certified movement. The reference is favored by collectors, as it used a large (for the period, and compared to other Oyster Perpetual models) 36mm case, almost identical to what would be later used for the Explorer line.  In fact, a few of the 6298s, such as the watch offered here today, circa 1953, were signed “Explorer” on the dial, before Rolex produced an official Explorer line, and these examples are highly collectible and sought after.

This early Rolex Explorer-dial Oyster Perpetual is in beautiful vintage condition.  The case appears unpolished, with no wear from a polishing wheel to the sides of the case or pin holes.  The dial is striking, with no wear or damage, and a gorgeous visceral cream patina from radium aging over the years.  In connection, the watch retains its original radium lume on both dial and hands, aged to a vivid orange color.
